What Is the Temperature And Pressure Relief Valve?
Temperature and pressure relief valves are safety devices installed on water heaters. The valves open up and release water if water temperature or pressure exceeds a safe or normal range. Specifically, the valve will open if water temperature exceeds 210 degrees or if pressure is higher than 150 psi. If water is becomes too hot or if pressure increases too much, then the water heater will be placed under a great deal of stress. In some cases, the heater itself can develop a leak or even burst to relieve the pressure.
In other words, the temperature and pressure relief valve is meant to prevent serious problems like eruption. The valve generally sits on the very top of the water heater and a PVC pipe is connected to it. This pipe is quite long and typically extends all the way to the floor. This type of length stops extremely hot water from splashing on you if water is released.
How Do You Test The Temperature And Pressure Relief Valve?
You can easily test the pressure and temperature relief valve. However, you should turn your water heater off for at least an hour or two beforehand. This will help to prevent burns if water happens to splash on your skin.
Once the water heater has cooled for some time, set a bucket or another type of container underneath the pipe attached to the temperature and pressure relief valve. Look for the small metal lever on the top of the valve. This is called the trip lever and it can be manually lifted to open the valve. Flip the lever so it sits straight up and down. Listen for a rush of air. This will be the air releasing from the valve and the discharge pipe.
Wait several seconds until water starts to release from the valve. Water should start releasing from the discharge pipe in a steady stream. If water comes out in a trickle or not at all, then contact a plumber as soon as possible to replace the temperature and pressure relief valve. If the valve works correctly, then flip the lever back into place and turn your water heater back on.
